UPDATE: Cyclist killed in hit and run; police search for suspect

Mon, Jul 1: RCMP are searching for the driver who struck and killed a cyclist in Burnaby last night, and then fled the scene. Grace Ke reports – Jul 1, 2013

Burnaby RCMP is appealing to witnesses after a deadly hit and run involving a 72-year-old cyclist was struck and killed near 13th and Wright Street in Burnaby on Sunday night.

Police and emergency services arrived at the scene at 8:30 p.m. where the male cyclist was pronounced dead. The vehicle involved in the hit and run is described as a dark coloured two-door car and should have damage to the passenger side. It was last seen travelling eastbound on 16th Avenue.

The street is a popular bike route with clearly marked signs, speed bumps and a traffic calming device. Residents in the neighbourhood say despite all that’s put into place to deter bikes and cars speeding, it still happens.

The victim lived in Surrey but his identity has not been released to the public.

Police are seeking any information from anyone who may have seen the suspect vehicle or driver following the collision.
