Winnipeg taxicab driver killed on Burrows Avenue

Winnipeg police have confirmed a taxicab driver was killed after being assaulted early Thursday.

Police said they were called to the scene at about 5:25 a.m., where they “responded to a taxi cab driver in distress.” When they got there, they found the cab stopped in the middle of the roadway in the 500 block of Burrows Avenue.

Officers found the driver and said he had been “seriously assaulted.”

He was taken to hospital in critical condition but later died.

Duffy’s Taxi confirmed to Global News the victim was one of their drivers.

“As of now we don’t have many details related to this incident. We have been providing whatever information we have related to this Taxi and the driver to Winnipeg Police and Winnipeg Vehicles For Hire.

“We contacted the family of this driver and assured assistance wherever we can.”

The WPS Homicide Unit is investigating. Anyone with information should call 204-986-6508.

It is the city’s eighth homicide of the year.
