Passerby spurs rescue effort for man trapped down well

Conway Whitstone was out for a walk with his girlfriend Sunday afternoon when he heard a call for help from a well.

“˜He was just saying that over and over help and he was banging I don’t know like a metal bar against some steel,’ said Whitstone.

A man fell 25-feet down the well, hurt his ankle, and couldn’t get out. He was stuck for five hours before Whitstone happened by and called 911.

Fire paramedic officials arrived around 1:15 p.m. to the site of the well, that’s near an abandoned City reservoir off Logan Avenue.

A rescue worker was lowered down the narrow dark hole to help the man.

Using a tripod and a winch, it took emergency crews less than an hour to get the victim out. The middle aged man’s foot was bleeding as he was put in an ambulance and taken to hospital.

No one knows why the man climbed onto the well, or if he removed the seal from the top. The Fire Paramedic Service says it has called the City to ensure the cover is bolted down.

The man’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. His age and name were not released.
