ASIRT investigating Edmonton police shooting that injured teenager

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is investigating a police shooting that happened in northeast Edmonton on Monday night, which sent a teenager to hospital.

Edmonton police descended on townhouses near 130 Avenue and 85 Street after reports of a shooting at around 7 p.m., according to witnesses. People in the area told Global News they heard a gunshot and saw the EPS Canine Unit arrive.

According to ASIRT, one officer discharged a round from a “ARWEN less-lethal” device and another officer discharged a single round from his carbine.

The 15-year-old boy sustained non-life-threatening injuries to his lower body and was taken into custody, ASIRT said.

The teen received medical care on scene before being taken to hospital. No one else was injured in the incident, ASIRT said.

No one in the immediate area was allowed to enter or exit the area for several hours while police investigated.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently, and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person, as well as serious or sensitive allegations of police misconduct.
