A transport truck driver has been charged following the death of another transport truck driver on Highway 401 near Brockville on Thursday.
Ontario Provincial Police closed the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near between County Road 2 and Stewart Boulevard just before 7 p.m. Thursday following a crash involving two transport trucks.
OPP say that one transport truck became disabled in one of the lanes, and police were called. As OPP approached the disabled transport, police say officers saw another transport strike the stationary truck.
During the collision, the driver of the stationary truck, 55-year-old Bernard Perrault of Frampton, Que., was also struck. Police say Perrault was outside of his own truck when he was struck and was found underneath the second transport.
Although officers on scene tried to to provide life-saving measures to Perrault, he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene. OPP could not comment on exactly where Perrault was standing when he was struck by the vehicle, saying that this was still under investigation.
The driver of the second vehicle, Miladinko Majstrorovic, 63, of Toronto, was charged with careless driving causing death.
He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brockville at a later date to answer to the charge.
OPP collision reconstructionists were on scene overnight, and the highway reopened Friday around 7:30 a.m.
There was reportedly a small diesel spill as a result of the collision as well.
