UPDATED: Highway 97 in Lake Country reopens after car slams into power lines

Highway 97 in Winfield was closed in both directions after a car smashed into a power line Tuesday afternoon. However, it reopened to single-lane traffic around 9 p.m. Tuesday night.

The closure was just south of Beaver Lake Road, according to Kelowna RCMP.

Shane Curveon witnessed the crash and said a vehicle swerved to miss a stopped pickup truck.

“The white truck was hit by the car that hit the pole,” he said. “The car is in the ditch hidden by the transformer in the [above] photo.”

In an email, Sgt. Mike Cooke said BC Hydro attended the scene. Although the highway was expected to partially reopen to traffic around 9 p.m., he estimated it would be another four hours before it completely reopens.

Police say northbound traffic should take John Hindle Drive, while southbound traffic should take Glenmore Road.
