Durham Regional Police say a 24-year-old man has died after a two-vehicle crash in Whitby Monday evening.
At around 9:38 p.m., emergency crews were called to the intersection of Cochrane Street and Dundas Street West with reports of a collision.
Police said the driver of a blue Subaru was travelling westbound when he struck an eastbound travelling Dodge Caravan that was turning left to go northbound on Cochrane Street.
When officers arrived, paramedics were performing CPR on the driver of the Subaru. The man was then transported to hospital by paramedics in serious condition.
“Despite their best efforts, the 24-year-old male was pronounced dead at hospital. The driver of the Dodge Caravan was taken to local hospital with minor injuries,” police said in a statement released Tuesday morning.
Police said the force of the collision dislodged the Subaru’s gas tank, which caught fire, and was found southwest of the intersection on private property.
The victim’s identity is being withheld at the request of his family.
Officers closed down the intersection as collision reconstruction investigators attended the scene and gathered evidence.
