Police said they were called to Yonge Street and Major Mackenzie Drive at around 2 a.m. for reports of a blue pickup striking poles and medians.

When officers arrived, police said they found a severely damaged Ford F-150 stopped on the curb.

Investigators said the driver first got into the pickup truck in the parking lot of a business. The man then started driving around the parking lot and crashed into five unoccupied, parked vehicles.

The man then drove out of the parking lot and began driving along Yonge Street hitting street lights, signs and a light pole before coming to a stop.

Soon after, officers located and arrested the driver who had fled the scene on foot.

Police said Joseph Rooney, a resident from Richmond Hill, was taken into custody.

Rooney, 24, is charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, three counts of failing to stop after an accident and two counts of mischief over $5,000.

Investigators said impairment was not a factor.

Police said no one was physically injured during the incident.

Investigators said the roads will be closed for several hours. Yonge Street was closed between Major Mackenzie Drive and Crosby Avenue for hydro repairs.

Rooney is expected to appear in court Thursday.
