U-Haul deal to move into Regina’s Centennial Market building falls through

A deal that would have seen U-Haul purchase and redevelop the former Sears warehouse in Regina has fallen through.

In a statement released Friday morning, Centennial Market said the deal fell through the day U-Haul was expected to take possession — while noting the market will still be going on.

“A a lot of stress has come off because there were a lot of unknowns about what would happen when they took possession. They [U-Haul] weren’t telling us anything,” said Matt Thompson, Centennial Market board member.

“It gives us a second chance to show that we can make it here. We’ve shown in the past that we do have potential we just have to get organized and get going. We’re looking for more vendors and we have a bunch of other ideas.”

U-Haul had plans to repurpose the building into a full-service U-Haul and self-storage facility.

“After careful consideration, U-Haul concluded the Centennial Shopping Centre location was not ideal for our self-storage product at this time. As a result, we are no longer operating at 1230 Broad St,” said Ryan Pearson, U-Haul Company of Central Canada president in a statement to Global News.

“U-Haul moving trucks and trailers remain available to our Regina customers at our one Company-owned store and the 10 small businesses serving the city as U-Haul dealers. We will continue to consider potential retail and self-storage locations in Regina and surrounding communities as they become available.”

The moving and storage company was still several years from moving into the building, but their designs were approved by Regina city council in August.
