A 55-year-old man is dead after a canoeing accident in a Newmarket conservation area, according to York Regional Police.
The Newmarket man was travelling up the Holland River though the Maple Davis Conservation Area, when he went over a two metre-high dam. The canoe was caught up in churning "hydro lock" at the bottom and capsized.
"As he approached the dam here, it seems that he went over," said Insp. Doug Conley of York Regional Police. "(He) was seen by some people out for a walk."
The witnesses on a nearby trail called 911 just after 1:00 p.m.
The man was rushed to South Lake Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
When the Marine Unit pulled the canoe from water, they found a number of personal items, including a camera and a drivers license found in small fanny pack.
Police also said the water levels in the area were very high compared to normal levels.
