B.C.’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), has been called to investigate the death of a man in Langley on Wednesday.
IIO chief civilian director Ron MacDonald says Langley RCMP received a dropped 911 call around 3 a.m. Using GPS, they pinged the call to the intersection of 72 Avenue and 208 Street, where they found a man.
A physical altercation reportedly took place as officers tried to take the man into custody.
MacDonald says police tried to revive him with naloxone.
“EHS was called and they were on their way, and in the meantime, police gave first aid, however, unfortunately, the man passed away on the scene,” he said.
MacDonald says the IIO is now looking for witnesses and trying to determine how the man died and what role, if any, the altercation played in his death.
72 Avenue in Langley was blocked off from 208 Street to 210 Street on Wednesday morning.
