Toronto police say a 54-year-old woman was pronounced dead on scene after being hit by a cement truck in midtown Tuesday morning.
Emergency crews were called to Yonge Street and Erskine Avenue, near Eglinton Avenue, at around 10 a.m. for reports of a collision.
Sgt. Brett Moore said the commercial truck was turning onto Erskine Avenue, off Yonge Street and struck the woman who was crossing the road.
Moore said its early in the investigation but said investigators believe the woman may have been dragged.
Coun. Mike Colle, who represents the ward across the street from where the collision happened, called for a temporary freeze on construction in the area. He said he wants developers to be required to file traffic management safety plans, provide increased training for truck drivers, and ensure there are full-time crossing guards at every construction site.
“We’ve had traffic mayhem here nonstop because of all the condos that are going up, so we’ve got regular traffic plus construction traffic around the clock,” Colle told Global News.
“Developers won’t like it, but the reality is people in this area have been enduring this traffic danger for seven days a week.”
