Kingston police have charged a 34-year-old Verona man after a five-vehicle collision shut down half an intersection in Kingston for several hours on Sunday.
The crash happened at Princess Street and Sir John A. MacDonald Boulevard at around 3:30 p.m.
According to police, a white Hyundai was driving westbound on Princess Street when the vehicle ran a red light at the intersection, striking a Volkswagen travelling north on Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard.
This caused the Volkswagen to be rammed into a Honda travelling beside it. The Volkswagen then spun 180 degrees and struck a light standard in the median, which fell and struck two other vehicles.
Police say the driver who originally caused the collision fled the crash on foot. The man, who was left bloodied from the collision, was caught by police 45 minutes later in a taxi.
The man was sent to hospital to treat his injuries, and once he was cleared for release, he was arrested and charged with dangerous operation of motor vehicle, four counts of leaving an accident, failing to give a name or offer assistance and breaching his probation.
The other drivers involved in the collision were sent to hospital or treated by paramedics with non-life-threatening injuries.
