Son charged with 2nd-degree murder of 74-year-old father in Oakville: police

WATCH ABOVE: A 40-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder in the death of his father in Oakville. Police say they were called to an apartment building at 8 p.m. Sunday about two men having an altercation. When they arrived, they found a 74-year-old man suffering what they called “obvious trauma”. Halton Regional Police say a son has been charged with the second-degree murder of his father in Oakville Sunday night.

Police said officers responded to a home on Marine Drive just after 8:00 p.m. after they received a report about an altercation between two men.

They said officers located a 74-year-man who had suffered obvious trauma. He was pronounced dead on scene.

Investigators said a 40-year-old man was also arrested at the scene.

Monday afternoon, police identified the man as Brett Smith. The victim was identified as Robert Smith, Brett’s father.

Neighbours told Global News Robert was a retired firefighter.

Brett appeared in a Milton court Monday, where the matter was put over until Thursday.

Police said the two men knew each other, and they are not looking for any additional suspects.
