1 dead, 5 in hospital after serious multi-car cash in Richmond Hill

A 44-year-old man has died and multiple people were rushed to hospital following a collision involving a suspected drunk driver in Richmond Hill on Sunday night.

York Regional Police responded to the area of Yonge Street between 19th Avenue and Jefferson Side Road a little before 9:30 p.m.

Investigators said four vehicles were involved in the crash, alleging that a white Mercedes struck a grey Hyundai, a red Toyota Sienna van and a white Mazda.

Paramedics said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and five others were transported to hospital.

According to police, a 40-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Manisha Orya told Global News she was putting her baby to sleep when she saw a white car “zoom” by and then heard a big explosion.

She said her and her family ran out and saw a Mercedes in pieces and another car on the side of the road.

“It was scary. My daughter didn’t sleep the whole night … she was traumatized. She cried and I didn’t sleep,” she said.

The accused driver of the Mercedes, Fereidoon Hayatibahari, 19, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

He has been charged with several impaired driving offences, including impaired driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death.
