Saanich Police are investigating what they call a “suspicious death” in a residential neighbourhood this weekend.
Officers first descended on the 100-block of Crease Avenue Saturday morning, and remained on scene into Sunday.
Police said Sunday they received reports of a man lying unresponsive outside a home at the intersection of Crease Avenue and Wascana Street just before 9 a.m.
The man was confirmed deceased, and investigators believe his death is suspicious “due to the nature of his injuries.”
On Monday, police identified the deceased man as 30-year-old Andrew Michael Sidor of Victoria.
Officers have been able to track some of Sidor’s movements prior to his death and have obtained surveillance video from the Rock Bay area of Victoria.
Police have not recovered his backpack or shoes. Anyone who finds these items is asked to not touch them and call police immediately.
Sgt. Julie Fast with Saanich Police said investigators are hoping to hear from witnesses and anyone who was driving near the neighbourhood between 6 am. and 9 a.m. Saturday, particularly those with dashcam footage.
“This is a residential area, close to several businesses, the Galloping Goose Trail and the Trans Canada Highway,” Fast said. “It is very likely that someone from the area or passing through, saw something of value to this investigation.”
Neighbours told Global News Saturday that the body was discovered by an elderly woman who called police.
“I went over to talk to her and see if she needed anything … and that’s when she pointed at the body across the street and said she found a dead guy,” Heather Allensen said.
Allensen said she and other residents also saw the body and believe he was shot.
“All I saw was a bunch of blood, because I didn’t get close enough,” she said, adding she didn’t recognize the man.
David Reilly said he also saw the body Saturday morning, and was shocked it was found so close to his home.
“I’ve always found this a good, safe neighbourhood,” he said. “I’ve left my home and car unlocked a couple times, perhaps foolishly in this case.”
Police taped off the section of Crease Avenue, including part of the nearby Galloping Goose Trail and the intersection at Seaton Street.
Residents and people using the trail are asked to respect the police tape and follow posted detours as officials investigate.
Officers are expected to remain at the scene and keep it cordoned off until “sometime” tomorrow.
