The fire started at about 12:45 a.m. Monday at a warehouse at 274 Jarvis Ave, said the city of Winnipeg. From there, it spread throughout the building, which occupies an entire city block.

Multiple fire trucks are being used to battle the blaze including an aerial ladder.

“Eight nearby residences were also evacuated. Winnipeg Transit provided a bus to shelter the evacuees. Manitoba Hydro cut power to the surrounding area to ensure affected hydro lines, poles, and transformers did not add to the hazards,” said the city in a release.

The entire building has collapsed and it’s expected crews will be on scene throughout the day and into tomorrow.

“Certainly to the east of the fire, the air quality is of concern,” said Lane. “Especially if you’ve got any pre-existing breathing difficulties.”
