The BC Coroners Service has confirmed a teenage boy has died after a tree fell at a camp on Vancouver Island.
The tree fell at Camp Barnard close to Sooke on Wednesday, shortly before 3:30 p.m.
Sooke RCMP said the 13-year-old victim was found trapped under the fallen tree, and succumbed to his injuries at the scene despite life-saving efforts.
“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family and friends as they grieve this very tragic incident,” Cpl. Dawn Gilhen said in a statement Thursday.
A second person, a teenage boy, was transported to hospital by ground ambulance in critical but stable condition, the BC Ambulance Service said.
RCMP said Thursday the second boy is being treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
The Greater Victoria School District No. 61 confirmed in a statement that a student from Lansdowne Middle School in B.C.’s capital died suddenly on a field trip.
The school district has dispatched a critical incident response team to help students, families and staffers.

Counsellors have also been made available at Lansdowne Middle School for anyone who needs assistance following the incident.
“We are saddened by the loss to our school community and will make every effort to support you and your child as you need,” Greater Victoria School District Superintendent Shelley Green said in a statement.
