Son charged after mother dies in suspicious fire at Oshawa apartment: police

Durham Regional Police have charged an Oshawa man in connection with the death of an 83-year-old woman, who is the suspect’s mother, after a fire broke out at an Oshawa apartment Sunday night.

Investigators said Timothy Mooney, 56, is facing second-degree murder charges. Police said he is the son of the victim, now identified as Yvonne Mooney, and that they lived in the same apartment together.

Emergency crews responded to a fire at an apartment building on Nonquon Road, near Simcoe Street North and Taunton Road East, just after 7 p.m.

Police said a woman was located inside the unit with injuries after firefighters extinguished the fire. She was transported to hospital where she later died.

Police called the fire suspicious and homicide detectives were called back to the scene to take over the investigation. Mooney was arrested a short time later.

There is no word on the cause of the fire.

This is Durham Region’s fifth homicide of the year, according to police.
