A man is facing charges after a Clarington hockey club was defrauded thousands of dollars.
Last month, Durham police say, the Clarington Toros, under the Minor Hockey Association noticed inconsistencies with their finances. After a review of the transactions, the club discovered they were short by more than $22,000.
In a statement released to Global News, Gerry Owens, President of the team says, “It is a very unfortunate situation for our team,” says Owens. “As parents became suspicious of the team financials, they contacted the Clarington Minor Hockey Association who in turn investigated, and subsequently notified police.”
Durham Regional Police launched an investigation and arrested and charged a 41-year-old man with breach of trust and theft over $5,000.

He has been released on a promise to appear.
Investigators are not releasing the name of the suspect at this time. Officials with the CMHA say the man’s child still plays on the team.
