Driver in custody after reports of van swerving, speeding through uOttawa campus

A driver is in custody after reports that a van was speeding and swerving through the uOttawa campus on Wednesday afternoon.

The white minivan could be seen zipping through campus with its front bumper missing, narrowly avoiding other cars in the process.

Police first received calls reporting an erratic or intoxicated driver at around 3:49 p.m. in the Laurier Avenue and King Edward Avenue area. Police confirmed that the driver struck several vehicles.

Police confirmed on Twitter that the male driver was in police custody and there were no reports of injuries.

The university says that the campus is now safe following the incident and that police continue to investigate. It is also encouraging any students who may have been shaken by the incident to call their support line.

Markings on the van indicated it belongs to Direct Transportation, a student transportation company in Ottawa. When reached for a statement the company was unable to comment on the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
