The federal government is investing up to $1.5 million, subject to a formal funding agreement, to help the university find ways to reduce electricity and natural gas consumption.

“The university will be saving $650,000 a year,” Canada’s Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said Wednesday in Saskatoon.

“Which is a very significant cost saving and then that money can then be used for other more important purposes like investing in students and classes and studies and improving the quality of education.”

The project will analyze 26 U of S campus buildings to identify systems and low-cost measures that will be implemented immediately.

The funding comes from the government’s Low Carbon Economy fund, which is intended to help provinces, municipalities and institutions improve energy efficiency in buildings.
