Kelowna advances to final four at B.C. boys basketball championships

Two games, two wins for the Kelowna Owls. Now, can they make it three for three?

At Langley, Kelowna advanced to the final four of the 2019 B.C. boys high school championships by posting an 84-77 victory over Heritage Woods of Port Moody in quarter-final action on Thursday.

The win propelled KSS into the final four of the 4A tournament, which ends Saturday evening with the championship game. On Friday evening, at 8:45 p.m., No. 7-ranked Kelowna will play No. 3 Terry Fox of Port Coquitlam in the semifinals. The other semi at 7 p.m. features No. 9 Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey and No. 5 Burnaby South.

The winners will play in Saturday’s final at 8:15 p.m.

Also Thursday, Lord Tweedsmuir pulled off the tournament’s biggest upset by defeating No. 1 Holy Cross of Surrey 79-69. Burnaby South beat No. 13 Centennial 81-60 and Terry Fox crushed No. 6 Oak Bay of Victoria 100-66.

In boys 3A tournament action, No. 2 Vernon Secondary advanced to the final four by besting No. 7 Rick Hansen of Abbotsford 66-57 in quarter-final action on Thursday afternoon.

On Friday, Vernon will play No. 6 A.R. MacNeill of Richmond at 3:30 p.m., with No. 9 North Delta playing No. 4 Duchess Park in the other semifinal.

Also Thursday, North Delta beat No. 1 Sir Charles Tupper of Vancouver 74-67, Duchess Park of Prince George beat No. 5 G.W. Graham of Chilliwack 72-64 and A.R. MacNeill bested No. 14 Argyle of North Vancouver 77-68.

In boys 2A tournament action, No. 7 George Elliot of Lake Country advanced to Friday’s semifinals by defeating No. 2 D.P. Todd of Prince George 91-74 in quarter-final action on Thursday.

On Friday at 7 p.m., George Elliot will play No. 11 St. Michael’s University of Victoria at 7 p.m. The other semi features No. 1 Charles Hays of Prince Rupert and No. 12 Sa-Hali of Kamloops.

Also Thursday, Charles Hays beat No. 9 Westsyde of Kamloops 87-68, Sa-Hali downed No. 13 Abbotsford Christian 68-59 and St. Michael’s edged No. 3 Langley Christian 60-59.

In boys 1A tournament action, No. 2 Kelowna Christian advanced to the final four while No. 5 Vernon Christian fell in the quarter-finals.

On Thursday, Kelowna bested No. 7 Cedars Christian of Prince George 77-43. Vernon lost 78-58 to No. 4 Credo Christian of Langley.

Kelowna will now play No. 3 Highroad Academy of Chilliwack in Friday’s semifinals at 5:15 p.m., with No. 1 Glenlyon Norfolk of Victoria and Credo Christian tangling in the other semi at 3:30 p.m.

Also Thursday, Glenlyon Norfolk bested No. 8 King David of Vancouver 80-72 and No. 3 Highroad Academy beat No. 6 Similkameen 70-62.
