The most NDP-friendly neighbourhoods in B.C. last election

The strongest support for the BC NDP tends to be concentrated in the city centres of small towns with regional importance. Global News broke down data from last election, and found a number of polling stations, where more than 100 people voted and the NDP received more than 75% of the vote. Here are 12 of them.

1. Kispiox-Stikine: 96.4% NDP.

It’s a village of close to 600 people managed by the Kispiox Band Council, just north of Hazelton. It was also home to perhaps the strongest NDP polling stations in the province— the NDP received 212 votes here last election, compared to just five for the Liberals.

2. Bella Coola-North Coast: 95% NDP.

The town centre of Bella Coola, located at the end of Highway 20, gave 132 votes to the NDP’s Gary Coons last election, compared to just 4 for Herb Pond of the Liberals.

3. North Newton-Surrey-Newton: 93.2% NDP.

A small collection of houses to the southeast of 132nd Street and 80th Avenue, this polling station recorded 97 votes for the NDP and 5 votes for the Liberals.

4. Southeast Hastings-Sunrise-Vancouver-Hastings: 88.5% NDP.

The polling station for the group of apartments to the northwest of the Highway 1 and 7 intersection heavily favoured the NDP last election. Incumbent Shane Simpson received 115 of 130 votes.

5. Chilean Housing Co-operative-Vancouver-Kingsway: 87% NDP.

The polling station provided for the co-op at School and Tyne Avenue greatly favoured the NDP last election. Adrian Dix received 87 votes, while his Liberal opponent got eight votes.

6. Creekside, Surrey-Surrey-Green Timbers: 84.9% NDP.

One of many neighbourhoods in this riding that had 80+% support for the NDP, this one, just north of Creekside Elementary, saw the NDP receive 146 votes to the Liberals’ 22.

7. Castlegar city centre-Kootenay West: 83.7% NDP.

The western half of Castlegar from 7th to 10th street was one of many Kootenay West polling stations to vote overwhelmingly for the NDP last election. NDP incumbent Katrine Conroy received 128 of 153 votes.

8. North Port Alberni-Alberni-Pacific Rim: 83.9% NDP.

Port Alberni has many areas that strongly support the NDP, but the polling station to the east of Blair Park was one of the strongest, with the party outpacing the Liberals here 118 to 20.

9.  Cormorant Island-North Island: 83.2% NDP.

NDP incumbent Claire Trevena received 114 of 137 votes from this polling station north of Alert Bay last election.

10. Hidden Valley Mobile Home Park, Langford-Juan de Fuca: 80.9% NDP.

The polling station for this rental mobile home park north of Florence Lake strongly supported the NDP last election. John Horgan received 106 of 131 votes here.

11. Nelson Park, Vancouver-Vancouver-West End: 79.4% NDP.

The alley between Pendrell and Comox street where this one-block polling station resides.

Virtually every polling station in the West End is either an apartment or a city block, and this city block between Pendrell, Comox, Thurlow and Bute was one of the strongest for the NDP. They received 85 votes to the Liberals’ 14.

12.Downtown Nelson-Nelson-Creston: 77.6% NDP.

The area bordered by Stanley and Josephine streets in the commercial centre of Nelson voted strongly for the NDP last election. 90 of the 113 votes went to them from this polling station, with the rest split between the Liberals and Greens.
