Overdue fines at the Peterborough Public Library can be waived next month in exchange for a donation to a food bank agency.
From March 1-31, the library will be running a ‘Food For Fines’ event. For every non-expired, non-perishable food item donated by a patron, $2 in overdue fines will be waived from their library account up to $5,000.
All donated food items will go to Kawartha Food Share — an agency that assists more than 8,100 men, women and children every month through 36 member agencies in Peterborough City and county.
“We want the entire community to be aware that they have access to our collection, resources and services,” said Becky Waldman, the library’s marketing and communications co-ordinator.
“For many of our patrons, library fines can act as a barrier to returning to the library. We can help remove that barrier, as well as help out a local community resource by partnering with Kawartha Food Share.”
Food items can be brought to the checkout desk at the main library on Aylmer Street or at the DelaFosse Branch at 729 Park St. S.
