A pileup involving about 20 vehicles forced the complete closure of Highway 15 south at Saint-Jacques-le-Mineur, in the Montérégie region.

The accident happened Monday afternoon on the highway near kilometre 23.

According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), the crash caused some minor injuries; authorities have sent a bus to help stranded drivers.

“We are asking people to avoid that part of the highway and check with Quebec 511 before traveling,” said Claude Denis, SQ spokesperson.

A second accident occurred a short time later on Highway 15, near kilometre 25 at Saint-Constant.

Denis says approximately six vehicles were involved in the pileup, with drivers suffering minor injuries.

“Firefighters are also onsite because a fuel tank was involved in the accident,” said Denis.

He says at the moment, both north and southbound highway 15 are off limits.

He could not say when it is expected to reopen.
