Fire officials say unattended candle led to Hamilton mountain fire that killed dog

An unattended candle is believed to be the cause of a $350,000 house fire on Hamilton’s west mountain that killed a dog.

The fire department responded to a call at a two-storey home at 66 Greendale Dr. They say despite heavy damage to both floors, the fire was contained to the one unit of a housing complex.

The home’s lone occupant was reportedly evacuated and treated for minor burns, while the occupant’s dog died in the fire.

The Hamilton Fire Department is reminding residents never to leave candles burning unattended and to ensure all combustible materials are kept away from any lit candles.
