According to Northumberland OPP, around 1 p.m. two special constables with the OPP’s offender transport unit were removing a man from the holding cells at the OPP Cobourg detachment when the man suddenly assaulted the constables before being placed in a vehicle destined for the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay.

OPP say the man then fled on foot to the nearby Shell gas station on Division Street where he allegedly attempted to steal two vehicles.

Today’s Northumberland reports a woman intervened and “slugged” the man just as OPP and Cobourg Police Service officers arrived on scene and arrested him.
