The city of Ottawa says it has negotiated with legal counsel of victims who were most seriously injured in last month’s bus crash at Westboro station.
In a memo written by city solicitor Rick O’Conner and sent to the mayor and members of council, the city says interim payments are being made to those most injured in the crash and their families.
The payments are being made in order to help immediately to avoid waiting through the litigation process.
The city says the payments will be funded by the city’s insurance company, Frank Cowan Company Limited.

The initial agreement was made between the city and a legal counsel of one of the victims in the crash and the city’s insurer will be reaching out to other seriously injured victims through their legal counsel.
In a letter sent along with the memo, the lawyer of the victim, Derek Nicholson, speaks to the importance of these payments to help those who have been most affected by the tragedy.
“This can mean a great deal in terms of assisting those who are struggling following this tragedy,” said Nicholson. “I express thanks to the city and its insurer for this assistance.”
Last month, three people were killed and over 20 others were injured after a double decker bus slammed into a shelter at the Westboro bus station. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
