Man dead after Winnipeg police shoot guns on Sherbrook Street

A man is dead after officers opened fire in the West End Friday night.

Officers were patrolling near the area of Sargent Avenue and Maryland Street and spotted a man acting suspiciously at about 7:50 p.m., said Winnipeg police.

Officers approached the 24-year-old man, leading to a chase which ended in a nearby parking lot.

Officers said the man was carrying a weapon and police opened fire.

The man was taken to hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

The investigation has been handed over to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.
