No one was injured after a fire ripped through a house in the Municipality of Trent Lakes on Thursday night.
Around 8:45 p.m., Trent Lakes and Selywn Township firefighters responded to a fire call on Evergreen Way (Fire Route 96) near Little Bald Lake for reports of a basement fire. Selwyn firefighters responded as mutual aid and provided additional water supply and support in the area 12 kilometres east of Bobcaygeon.
Trent Lakes Fire and Rescue chief Don Mitchell says when crews arrived, they faced flames spreading throughout the three-storey home. Several occupants were outside waiting for firefighters to arrive.
“At this time all we know is that the smoke alarms worked, they alerted the family and they got out safely,” he told CHEX News. “By the time we got there the home was pretty much engulfed from the ground to the roof.”
The home is a total loss, according to officials.
Firefighters and investigators returned to the scene on Friday to extinguish hot spots.
Mitchell says they’re still trying to determine the origin and cause of the fire and a damage estimate.
“Working smoke alarms work – keep the batteries in them and keep them operating,” he said. “It will safe your life.”
