Police believe two drivers involved in a serious crash in south Edmonton early Friday morning were impaired.
Officers were called to 91 Street, north of Edwards Drive S.W., at around 2:15 a.m.
Police said a black Ford F-150 was heading south in the northbound lanes of 91 Street at a high rate of speed when it collided with a black Kia Soul, which was heading north.
Both drivers were provided first-aid by witnesses at the scene until EMS arrived, police said in a media release Friday afternoon.
Both drivers — a 58-year-old man driving the truck and a 28-year-old woman driving the SUV — were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
“Although the investigation is in its early stages… investigators believe impairment was a factor in this collision with respect to both drivers,” the Edmonton Police Service said Friday.
“Investigators also believe the F-150’s speed played a role.”
The crash forced the closure of 91 Street between Edwards Drive S.W. and Anthony Henday Drive for several hours Friday morning. By 10 a.m., police said the lanes had reopened.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage in the crash. The truck was seen in the northbound lanes near the Henday eastbound exit, while the SUV came to a rest on the 91 Street median.
The collision is now under investigation by the EPS Major Collision Investigation Section.
