$40 million donation for new U of C institute

The University of Calgary has received the largest single donation in its history.

Calgary’s Taylor family is donating $40 million to establish the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning.

The institute will research the most effective ways of engaging university students, research that can also be applied to students in grades K to 12.

U of C students will also have the opportunity to learn research and critical thinking skills.

“The Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning is a one-of-a-kind initiative that will completely transform the University of Calgary,” says U of C president Elizabeth Cannon. “It will ensure the best possible learning experience for all students and teachers.”

The U of C says the institute is a key part of its strategy to become one of the top five research institutions in Canada by 2016.

Don and Ruth Taylor have been strong supporters of the university.

They helped establish the Taylor Digital Library and the Katthy Taylor Chair in Vascular Dementia.

A home for the Taylor Institute will be built on the site of the former Nickle Arts Museum.
