Three to four residents live in the home but they were not inside when the first fire crews arrived and they were not hurt, Boone said. He believes they were renting the home.

When crews arrived, the back side of the house was fully involved and flames were through the roof. Boone said there is extensive damage to the back of the home, as well as the interior.

City engineering crews are trying to determine if the house can be renovated or if it must be knocked down for safety.

The house next door on the west side also sustained some damage but firefighters were able to save it from spreading throughout the home.

“The intensity of the fire upon arrival was a challenge and prevented [crews] from making an aggressive interior attack initially,” Boone said. “So the priority upon arrival was to prevent it spreading.”

The City of Vancouver is also sending a salt truck down the streets as the water used to fight the fire froze, making the surrounding streets and sidewalks icy.
