Evacuation order after gas leak in Fort Richmond has been lifted

Residents living in almost two dozen houses in Fort Richmond that had been evacuated due to a gas leak have returned home.

The evacuation order was lifted around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The City of Winnipeg said excavation work was being done around Radcliffe Road and Vassar Road in Fort Richmond by a private company in the area when a gas line was hit around 9:45 a.m.

About 25 homes in the area had to be evacuated.

About 50 houses had their gas service interrupted as a result of the damage.

Additionally, two further gas leaks prompted calls to Manitoba Hydro.

The first was in Waverley Heights in the 900 block of Chancellor Drive, where a contractor also hit a gas line, and the second was on the 500 block of Elmhurst. There were no evacuations due to the two other leaks.
