“We’re really excited to be moving forward with this project,” said Bernie Nimer, developer of One Young Street, in a statement. “The curtain wall glass building will feature Frit glass, which will reflect a permanent image of the historical hotel. It pays respect to the site’s history and we hope it will stand as a new marker on this important corner of the downtown.”

The main floor will house 6,800 square feet of retail space, including a juice bar, with the main entrance being on Young Street.

The rooftop restaurant will be 5,000 square feet, including 3,500 square feet of patio space and promising views of Victoria Park and downtown.

The city says that three of the five floors will offer modern post and beam office space, of which there is currently nothing available to rent in the downtown core.

If approved, construction on the building will begin in 2019 with the work slated for completion the following year.

The downtown area of Kitchener is currently undergoing a massive facelift as there are close to 20 projects in development.

By spring 2019, around $1.2 billion of new investment will be under construction, including 2,500 residential units.
