Damage pegged at $1.5 M for Assiniboia West Community Centre fire

A fire that destroyed a building and damaged two rinks at a west Winnipeg community centre last week suffered more than $1 million in damage.

The fire tore through the storage building between rinks at Assiniboia West Community Centre Aug. 2 in the early morning hours.

No one was hurt, but a spokesperson for the city of Winnipeg said the damage estimate is $1.5 million.

The cause is still under investigation, he added.

Sporting equipment in the building and some benches in the equipment room were destroyed, but community member Don Rhoden said that’s the least of the loss.

“You could knock on every one of these doors and they’ve all probably had a kid who has gone through this community centre,” Rhoden said.

“It’s way more than just a building.”

Nicole Woelke, president of the Assiniboia West Recreation Association, said the club plans to rebuild.
