Fredericton is cleaning up after a Monday night storm downed trees and left thousands of power customers in the dark.

One resident, Roger Cormier, says the storm came to life pretty quickly.

“All at once, we heard the thunder and then the rain started coming pretty hard,” he said.

“Then the power went off.”

The citywide rainstorm also led to localized flooding. At the height of the storm, 4,700 NB Power customers were without service.

“Calls for the fire department, calls for service, started coming in around 7:30 in the evening and continued. It was about a two hour event but there were about 29 calls, so many of them were cued. So we worked on those until shortly after 11 p.m.,” he said.

In a tweet, the City of Fredericton said its EMO had been activated and was monitoring the situation.

By Tuesday morning, crews were working to remove fallen trees and repair downed power lines.

Wayne Knorr, a spokesperson for the City of Fredericton, says the removed trees are being taken to be composted at the municipal facility and will eventually be used for projects in the area.

He says it’s important to stay away from fallen trees if there is any chance of power lines still being attached to them.

In one case, a large tree had toppled onto a home on Grey Street. Neighbours tell Global News the homeowners are out of town.
