The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating two overnight multiple-alarm fires in Hamilton.

Just before midnight, firefighters were called to a semi-detached home at 155 Elgin St. near Barton Street East. Heavy smoke and flames were reported when crews arrived.

At one point, the fire was gaining strength and firefighters were able to get out before there was a flashover on the first floor. There were no injuries and an early estimate suggests $250,000 in damage.

The second fire was about 5 a.m. on King Street East at Dunsmure Road.

It’s believed to have started in the marijuana dispensary on the first floor. A reporter on the scene says police think the cannabis store may have been targeted.

The four residents of the apartments above the storefront were taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Three cats died.

The cause is under investigation. There’s no estimate on damage yet.
