Charges laid against Wellington County OPP officer

Ontario Provincial Police say charges have been laid against a 29-year member of the force following a lengthy internal investigation.

Police said an investigation by their Professional Standards Bureau and West Region Crime Unit began on June 5 following allegations of “wrongdoing” by one of their officers.

Sgt. Shawn Jones, currently serving at the Wellington County detachment in Fergus Ont., was charged on Wednesday with obstructing justice and breach of trust.

An OPP spokesperson would not elaborate on what the charges stem from because she said the matter is now before the courts.

Jones has been suspended with pay and will make a court appearance on Aug. 28.
