No drugs, alcohol or contact: Conditions of Russ Wyatt’s release on sex assault charge

File / Global News

No drugs, no alcohol and no contact with the alleged victim.

Those are the conditions of release for City Councillor Russ Wyatt after being arrested and charged with sexual assault.

Court documents obtained by Global News show Wyatt is not to be within 200 metres of the alleged victim’s “place of residence, work, school, worship or any place he/she may be.”

It also stated the 48-year-old must not consume drugs, alcohol or other intoxicating substances.

The longtime Transcona councillor was arrested on July 10 after a six month long police investigation.

Police received a complaint Jan. 14 from a woman saying a sexual assault had taken place at a Winnipeg residence.  Police said the assault was not domestic in nature and did not happen at Wyatt’s Transcona home.

Police also said the woman is not believed to be a city employee.

The months-long investigation included several interviews as well as the collection of forensic evidence. Results of those tests were returned in early July and Wyatt was arrested the same day.

“The delay in sexual assault charges is almost always based on getting lab results back.  So forensic evidence is submitted and it takes a long time,” Const. Rob Carver said.

After the alleged incident, Wyatt checked himself into a rehab facility for drug and alcohol addiction where he spent 79 days.

Police would not disclose whether drugs or alcohol were related to the alleged assault.

Since the arrest, Wyatt has remained tight lipped. When Global News reached him back in early July he said he was innocent.

“I have no comment to make regarding the allegation against me other than to say that I am innocent of any wrong-doing. I will defend myself in a court of law and will only respond further to the allegation in a court room.”

Wyatt has not returned Global News’ calls or emails since and has been absent from City Hall.

His first court appearance is set for August 28.
