An early morning police chase in Saskatoon ended with a five and a half hour stand off involving four people in a stolen truck outside of Biggar, Sask. Wednesday morning.
The incident began at approximately 3:40 a.m. when Saskatoon police pursued a stolen Ford F 350 out of the city on Highway 14.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle with a spike belt, which deflated two of the truck’s tires. Despite this, the vehicle continued on Highway 14 toward Biggar.
According to police, the truck continued at speeds of 20 to 40 kilometres per hour on the rims of the tires.
Biggar RCMP tried to use another spike belt to stop the vehicle around 5:00 a.m. on Highway 14. The driver was able to avoid the belt by driving into the ditch, but got stuck.
The suspects refused to get out of the vehicle. RCMP and Saskatoon Police surrounded the truck, and closed off a section of the highway in order to negotiate with those inside.
More than five hours later, all four occupants, two men and two women, exited the truck and were taken into custody without incident.
Saskatoon police said two men, 22 and 27, and two women, 18 and 20, are facing 15 charges including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading police, and possession of stolen property.
They were scheduled to appear Wednesday evening before a justice of the peace.
