In a display of community in action, neighbours stepped in after a man broke into a west-end backyard to allegedly steal items from a woman’s shed, police said.
On July 5 at around 10:30 a.m., the complainant was at home when she heard a loud bang, according to police.
She went outside to investigate and says she observed the accused walking towards her shed. The woman ran to a neighbour’s home to call 911, and then multiple neighbours confronted the man, police said, following him as he fled on foot.
When police arrived, descriptions provided by the neighbours and the help of the canine unit were instrumental in finding him, officers said. Police said the man was found hiding under a set of stairs in the backyard of a nearby residence.
Further investigation revealed the accused had allegedly broken a gate at the woman’s residence to enter her backyard, and had started gathering various items.
A 24-year-old local man had been charged with theft, mischief, and breach of probation.
