UPDATE: 10:45 p.m. — A 16-year-old hiker has died after he and a friend became lost along the Dilly Dally trail near Buntzen Lake, said Coquitlam SAR search manager Ray Nordstrand. He and a friend decided to follow a water feature, which appeared to be a waterfall, downhill, and the 16-year-old ended up falling.
The pair had reasonable equipment, but “definitely they were not prepared for where they ended up going down,” Nordstrand said.
“When you get lost, it’s not a good idea to follow a creek down,” he added.
Nordstrand advised hikers to carry the essentials with them, which includes a map and compass to help them orient where they are.
