Two more announce Conservative nomination bid for late Gord Brown vacancy

Two more people have announced their bid for the Conservative nomination in the riding of Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes.

Due to former MP Gord Brown’s death on May 2, a byelection needs be called before the end of October of this year. The Conservative Party has not yet chosen its candidate for the riding, which was held by Brown and the Conservatives since 2004.

On June 20, Stephanie Mitton announced her candidacy for the Conservative nomination, and Anne Johnston announced on Tuesday that she too would be seeking the nomination.

According to Mitton’s announcement press release, she worked for World Vision Canada and Universities Canada in public relations for the last decade

“Stephanie is an excellent candidate for the riding. She has exceptional knowledge of government and how it works, with a strong record for getting things done in government,” said John Nater Conservative MP for Perth-Wellington about the Lombardy, Ont., native.

As for Johnston, who is described as a longtime campaign volunteer and former aide to MPP Steve Clark, she announced her run on Tuesday at the Keystorm Pub in Brockville.

There are now four candidates running for the federal Conservative nomination bid in the riding.

Federal Conservative riding president Michael Barrett announced his run on June 20, and Colin Brown, Gord Brown’s nephew, announced his run on June 11.

There is still no date for the nomination meeting.

Only members of the Conservative Party of Canada who live in the riding of Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes can vote for the candidate of their choice. Memberships can be purchased online.
