Fargo ramps up flood preparations

The U.S. National Weather Service says Fargo, N.D., and neighbouring Moorhead, Minn., should brace for a top five flood event during spring 2013. US National Weather Service/Handout

WINNIPEG – Officials in Fargo, N.D., met Monday to discuss flood prevention.

The National Weather Service said Thursday there is a 10 per cent chance the North Dakota city could see a record flood in 2013.

Monday’s meeting was designed to plan before sandbagging efforts begin in April.

“This is our third meeting. Getting everyone on the same page is extremely important,” Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker said.

Permanent flood protection was also discussed at the meeting. There are plans to build a diversion, lessening future potential flood damage.

Fargo is hoping to have one million sandbags prepared. Sandbagging efforts will start on April 3.
