Ontario’s police watchdog investigating after woman hit by car during arrest in Kitchener

Ontario’s police watchdog says it’s investigating after a woman was injured while Waterloo Regional Police officers arrested a suspect in Kitchener on Tuesday.

Officers were attempting to arrest a man at around 12:30 p.m. on Weber Street East between Franklin Street and Fergus Avenue in connection with a stolen vehicle, according to Waterloo police.

The Special Investigations Unit said that as officers were arresting the man, a female passenger who was with the suspect, attempted to run away. She was then struck by an oncoming vehicle.

Waterloo police then notified the SIU that the woman was injured. The SIU said the woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates incidents involving police that have resulted in death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault.
