The Airdrie Fire Department told Global News firefighters arrived at the scene at about 6:20 p.m. to find a garage with a vehicle inside that was engulfed in flames. Initially, firefighters had difficulties with a faulty fire hydrant but were quickly able to connect to another in order to battle the blaze.

Crews quickly contained the fire before it could spread to neighbouring homes but three homes were evacuated as a precaution.

Fire officials said the garage where the fire began was completely destroyed and that three homes sustained exterior damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The fire department said people will be allowed back into the homes that were evacuated once power is restored but did not say when that would be.
