Man charged with second-degree murder after victim of assault at St. Paul motel dies

A 42-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after the victim of an attack in St.Paul, Alta. last week died.

In a news release issued on Thursday, the RCMP said officers were called to an aggravated assault at an unspecified motel at 10:44 p.m. on March 29. They said the victim was given medical assistance before being taken to hospital in Edmonton where he died on Wednesday morning.

An autopsy conducted in Edmonton on Thursday concluded the death was a homicide.

Police have identified the victim as 39-year-old Emery John Large.

William Adaire Cardinal has been charged with second-degree murder. Cardinal has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in St. Paul Provincial Court on April 12 via closed-circuit television.

The RCMP declined to say what Large’s cause of death was or to provide details about the attack.

Police said they are not seeking any other suspects in connection with Large’s death.
