TORONTO – Sony unveiled two new Android smartphones to be added to their 2013 Xperia smartphone lineup Monday – the Xperia SP and Xperia L.
The new phones come just two months after the Xperia Z, the company’s flagship phone for 2013, was released – but both the Xperia SP and Xperia L are mid-range smartphones and focus on camera capabilities.
The Xperia SP features a 4.6 inch, 720p display with an 8-megapixel HDR camera, while the Xperia L has a smaller 4.3 inch display and an 8-megapixel “fast-capture” camera. Both phones will be available in white, red and black.
Sony holds the fourth-place position in the smartphone market, with 4.5 per cent of the total market share.
The smartphone maker recently said it hopes to pull ahead into the third-place position, behind tech giants Apple and Samsung. A recent report by Reuters indicated that Sony may look into producing cheaper models for developing markets in order to reach this goal.
Both the Xperia SP and Xperia L will be available worldwide in Q2 2013.
